Why a season of notes beats a perfect swing video

Somewhere on your phone there is a slow-motion video of a golf swing you were pleased with. You cannot remember which club it was, what you were working on, or whether the ball went anywhere pleasant. It is a beautiful, useless artefact.

This is the strange asymmetry at the heart of golf improvement: the capture is easy and everyone does it, while the thing that makes capture worth anything is tedious and almost nobody does it.

1You are the least reliable witness to your own golf

Memory does not store a season of practice; it stores a handful of vivid moments and quietly reconstructs the rest around whatever you currently believe. Ask a golfer in August what they were working on in April and you will get a confident, fluent and largely invented answer. This is not a character flaw, it is how memory works, and it is why every serious field that depends on learning writes things down.

2The thing you want to measure only appears over months

Motor learning research separates performance from learning for a precise reason: they diverge. What improves inside a session frequently fails to persist, and what feels clumsy in a session frequently retains better. If the quantity you care about is only visible weeks later, then a record spanning weeks is not administrative overhead. It is the measuring instrument.

3Context is what turns footage into evidence

A swing video on its own tells you what your body did. A swing video plus what you were working on, which club, how it felt, and where the ball finished tells you whether the thing you were trying actually worked. The second is evidence. The first is a photograph, and a season of photographs of a moving thing does not add up to an explanation.

4Write the feel down, because feels expire

The cue that unlocked something in May will be gone by July, and its replacement will feel just as revelatory. Golfers cycle through feels endlessly and rediscover the same three every couple of years. A record of which cues produced good ball flight, and roughly when they stopped working, is startlingly valuable and takes about ninety seconds a session to keep.

5Notice what you have quietly abandoned

The most common failure in amateur practice is not working on the wrong thing. It is starting four things and unknowingly dropping three. Nobody decides to abandon their putting stroke work; it simply stops appearing, crowded out by whatever went wrong most recently on the course. A record makes that visible, which is uncomfortable and useful in roughly equal measure. It is also the one insight no amount of swing video will ever surface, because the evidence of abandonment is precisely the footage that does not exist.

Common questions

What is the minimum worth recording?

Date, what you worked on, one sentence on what it felt like, and one sentence on what the ball did. That is under a minute and captures almost all of the value. Everything beyond it is refinement.

Is a notes app good enough?

Genuinely, yes, and a kept notebook beats an abandoned app every time. What a notes app does badly is letting you find the swing from six weeks ago that matches what you are working on today, which is the point at which structure starts earning its keep.

How long before a record starts being useful?

Around six to eight sessions. Before that you are accumulating; after it you can start seeing which cues recur, which focus areas you have quietly dropped, and whether a change survived a gap.

Does writing it down not take me out of practising?

It takes about ninety seconds at the end. The alternative is not more practice time - it is the same practice time spent rediscovering something you already knew in April.
